Verbena
"The Witches" · "The Old Faith"
Life
Blood, bone, and the turning of seasons. The Verbena are witches, druids, and cunning folk who understand magic as something felt in the gut before it's named. Their power runs through living things — healing, transformation, the life cycle in all its ugliness and beauty. They don't theorize. They plant, they bleed, they burn. Magic isn't a tool to them; it's a relationship with something older than language. Their covens are tight-knit, their grudges are generational, and their patience with people who think magic needs to be written down in Latin is essentially zero.
How Others See Them
Powerful and deeply rooted, but visceral in ways that make civilized mages uncomfortable. The Celestial Chorus thinks they're pagans who need saving. The Order of Hermes respects their raw power and wishes they'd write more of it down. Everyone is a little afraid of the senior members, and nobody says so out loud.

Dreamspeakers
"The Kha'vadi" · "Walkers Between Worlds"
Spirit
Shamans, spirit-talkers, and world-walkers drawn from indigenous magical traditions across every culture on earth. They walk the Umbra — the spirit world underlying all physical reality — and negotiate with the entities that live there. They are diplomats of the unseen: carrying messages between the living and the dead, brokering peace between spirits and mortals, keeping the membrane between worlds from tearing. They are the most politically marginalized Tradition on the Council and the most spiritually connected. They notice the contradiction.
How Others See Them
Underestimated constantly, which they are used to. The Council treats them as a catch-all for everyone who isn't Western, which the Dreamspeakers resent loudly and bond over quietly. Everyone agrees their Umbral knowledge is unmatched and everyone feels vaguely guilty about the political situation without doing much about it.

Akashic Brotherhood
"The Akashayana" · "The Monks"
Mind
The body is the instrument. The mind is the key. The Akashic Brotherhood practice Do — the original martial art — as a path to enlightenment, believing that physical discipline and perfect mental clarity are the same thing approached from different directions. They access the Akashic Record: the cosmic memory of everything that has ever happened. They are warriors, monks, philosophers, and scholars, all at once. They are patient in ways that make other Traditions feel impulsive. They have been practicing the same techniques since before most other Traditions existed and they will be practicing them long after.
How Others See Them
Respected as warriors and philosophers, but seen as slow-moving and aloof at the organizational level. The Euthanatos have a blood feud with them going back centuries that neither side has quite forgiven. Everyone else is a little in awe of the Brotherhood's discipline and would never admit it.

Celestial Chorus
"The Singers" · "The Devoted"
Prime
Every religion in human history is an imperfect map of the same divine truth. That's the Chorus position, and they mean it — priests, mystics, imams, rabbis, monks, and devotees of every faith who Awakened and realized their prayers were actually working. Their magic flows from devotion to the Prime, the universal creative force underlying all reality. They work through song, prayer, ritual, and invocation. They are ecumenical in theory, passionate in practice, and absolutely convinced that love is a magical force because they have watched it change things. They are earnest and powerful and occasionally the most morally exhausting people in any room.
How Others See Them
Earnest and powerful, but prone to moralizing at length. The Verbena and the Chorus have been arguing about whose goddess is whose for five hundred years. Everyone appreciates having them on the Council. Everyone wishes they would occasionally relax.

Euthanatos
"The Chakravanti" · "The Good Death"
Entropy
Everything ends. The Euthanatos made peace with that a long time ago and built a philosophy around it. They are death-mages, students of entropy, fate, and the Great Wheel of rebirth. Rooted in Hindu and ancient Greek death traditions, they believe that some lives must end so that better ones can begin — and they are willing to be the ones who make that call. They are not cruel. Most of them mourn every death they deal. But they are certain, and certainty in this line of work is the most dangerous trait there is. Every Tradition is glad the Euthanatos exist. No Tradition fully trusts them.
How Others See Them
Necessary and unsettling. The Akashic Brotherhood has a specific ancestral grievance going back centuries. Everyone else keeps a polite distance and makes sure not to give the Euthanatos a reason to add them to any kind of list.

Sons of Ether
"Etherites" · "The Society of Ether"
Matter
Rogue scientists who defected from the Technocracy when the Union suppressed ether theory, and they have never forgiven them. They work in a paradigm where the luminiferous ether exists, where Newtonian physics was more right than quantum theory, and where sufficiently inspired engineering can do anything. Their labs crackle with electricity, bubble with reagents, and hum with devices that should not function. The key word is should. They work because their creators believe they work, and belief is the whole engine. They are brilliant, eccentric, frequently dangerous, and correct about most things.
How Others See Them
Lovably chaotic and dangerously inventive. The Virtual Adepts think they're nostalgic dinosaurs clinging to dead science. The Etherites think the Adepts are arrogant children. The rest of the Council enjoys the argument and maintains a safe distance from the laboratory.

Cult of Ecstasy
"The Sahajiya" · "The Seekers"
Time
Transcendence is found through extreme experience. Music, dance, substances, pain, exhaustion, love, grief — anything that breaks the rational mind open far enough to let the universe pour in. They are mystics of sensation who realized that the thinking brain is a cage, and that only by bypassing it entirely can you perceive the true flow of time and possibility. They are artists, ravers, tantrikas, dervishes, and wanderers who are genuinely, profoundly present in a way most mages never manage. They are also, at Council meetings, an absolute handful.
How Others See Them
Either visionaries or a liability depending on who you ask. The Chorus thinks they're hedonists with thin philosophical veneer. The Akashic Brotherhood quietly respects their commitment to presence while publicly disapproving of the methods. Everyone uses their safehouses.

Virtual Adepts
"The Mercurial Elite" · "Reality Hackers"
Correspondence
The youngest Tradition, and the most certain they're right. Defectors from the Technocracy who brought one radical idea: reality is information, and if you can hack the code, you can change the world. They were cypherpunks and phone phreakers before those words existed, and now they are digital mages who work through networks, data, and the emerging virtual landscape of a world slowly waking up to itself. They believe the Technocracy's control of technology is the single greatest threat to Awakening, and they fight it from inside the machine. They are brilliant, arrogant, and invaluable. Everyone calls them when they need information and tries not to admit how often that is.
How Others See Them
Brilliant and grating. The older Traditions find their paradigm baffling and their confidence exhausting. The Sons of Ether are in a permanent cold war with them. Everyone else calls the Adepts when they need something found or someone located, usually late at night, usually without saying please.

Order of Hermes
"The Hermetics" · "The High Mages"
Forces
The heirs of the Western magical tradition — Solomonic ritual, Enochian summoning, Hermetic alchemy, Kabbalistic theory, and centuries of meticulous scholarship about how the universe works and how to compel it. They work in circles, with wands, in Latin, with geometric precision and complete documentation. They basically founded the Council of Nine and have never fully let the other Traditions forget it. Their magic is rigorous, formal, and extraordinarily powerful when practiced correctly. Their internal politics are a labyrinth. Their library is unmatched. Their interpersonal dynamics at any Council meeting are a nightmare for everyone else in the room.
How Others See Them
The most powerful and the most insufferable Tradition on the Council, and they know both things. Everyone respects the Order. Nobody fully enjoys dealing with them. The Dreamspeakers think they're colonial. The Verbena think they're sterile. They are probably right on both counts, and the Hermetics are working on it.

Mickey (Sorcerer's Apprentice)Fantasia
🎬 Film
An Hermetic apprentice who uses his master's tools without sufficient understanding and causes cascading Paradox. Every Order of Hermes Chantry has a story exactly like this. Usually funnier in retrospect.
Not every mage finds a Tradition. Orphans are self-taught mages who Awakened alone — no mentor, no lineage, no community. They may be more creative and less dogmatic than Tradition mages, but they lack everything the Traditions provide: no Chantry support, no mentor network, no accumulated lore to draw from, no one to call when things go wrong.
Orphans receive no Tradition sphere bonuses and have no access to Tradition resources. Freedom is real. So is the cost.
